Conclusion
Conclusion (by Anna Zichella)
In conclusion, Goal 8 focuses on aspects such as economic development and GDP growth, which often lead to the growth of social inequalities. In addition to age-related disparities (young people are much more affected by unemployment than adults), another alarming aspect concerns gender differences.
In 2018, the participation of women in the labour force was 48% of the total female population, while that of men was 75%. Approximately 3 in 5 of the 3.5 billion people in the labour force in 2018 were men: a clear difference in access to the world of work. This gap is also confirmed at the economic level: men earn on average 12% more than women, a pay difference that is much more noticeable when referring to managerial positions (20%).
What can we do?
- Keeping informed by following local and international news in the available media (TV, web, magazines and newspapers);
- Promoting meetings with people who have experience in a particular field of work in order to make people aware of the problems and potentials of different sectors: will help young people to be better prepared for their future jobs;
- Know your rights: in the world of work, besides knowing your duties, it is good to know what you are entitled to;
- Buy from local producers and companies: you can support the economic growth of your region by avoiding job losses.
