Writing is one of the main forms of communication. It can be used in many ways. Some of these ways include writing a letter, giving someone directions or writing out an invitation. Before the rise of technology, people relied solely on writing letters to communicate with one another. There was no cellphones, internet, email or social media. The type pf communication was known as snail mail.

The topic of your general writing assessment is the South African hero, Nelson Mandela.

When doing any kind of general writing, it is always advisable to do planning before submitting your final work. Below are reasons why planning is important:

  • It allows you to brainstorm what your writing is going to be about and enables your work to be well structured.
  • Planning consist of brainstorming, mind maps and rough drafts.
  • Doing planning, you are able to improve on your initial writing as well as allowing your work to be error-free.

Planning:

  1. Brainstorming – To brainstorm is to jot down all your ideas surrounding the topic. This will enable you to create a mind map.
  2. Mind map – A mind map is a creative way to place all your ideas down on paper. It is made up of headings, words and diagrams.
  3. Rough draft – Before going about your final draft, first do a rough draft. Having a rough draft, you are able to see where your mistakes are, where you could add more information or where you should remove information. You are able to edit and proof-read your work before producing the final draft. In this way, you can produce excellent and error-free work.

Please note: You are only to include a mind map and a rough draft for your planning.
