Introduction

Today we will be learning about Food Safety, Chapter 8 of your Food and Nutrition topic.

Food Safety is divided into 3 parts, namely: Food Spoilage, Food Hygiene and Safety and Food Storage. Today we will be focusing on Food Spoilage.

Task

Food Spoilage is a natural process in which food goes bad or decays over time.

There are mainly 2 causes of Food Spoilage: Natural decay in food and Micro-organisms.

Natural decay in food happens through moisture loss, absorption of moisture, enzymes and oxidation.

Micro-organisms that cause food spoilage are bacteria, mold, yeast and pathogenic micro-organisms. Pathogenic micro-organisms are micro-organisms that cause illness.
