Grow your Own Produce

Introduction

How to Regrow Vegetable Scraps - Simple Bites

Background:
Today there is very limited knowledge as to where produce comes from and how produce is grown. It is important knowledge individuals should be aware of when they are making dietary choices. It would provide a significant contribution in the improvement of overall health, especially considering the rise in obesity around the world. The problem could be better managed as individuals would have a more rounded understanding of food. In addition this knowledge of how to grow your own produce would provide sustainability opportunities and is mostly achievable by all.

Problem:
With the drought affecting agriculture around Australia it is becoming harder for individuals to access fresh produce to help maintain a healthy diet. This was further highlighted in the recent events of COVID with limited fresh produce available throughout the lockdowns. This can therefore be linked to the increasing poor health choices individuals are making.

It is your task to understand the appropriate growing climate of at least two different plants of your choice. Students are to determine the optimal growing conditions and to experiment with quick growing techniques and also the use of sustainability in the growing process.

Using the crops selected to grow a healthy lunch meal, it should be illustrated by the students to create a demonstration showing exactly how easy it is to grow fresh produce at home. This will allow an understanding of the attainability of this choice.

Objective:

This task will be completed in small groups as a project based learning task with each member having a key role (researcher, recorder, creator and speaker). This will allow the project to be completed to a high standard.

You will be given the term to decide what crop you would like to grow and propagate accordingly. At harvest you will be able to use it in a healthy lunch meal. This can be made in the class.

Tasks:

  1. Form a group and assign rolls.
  2. Research.
  3. Create an environment for these to be grown e.g an egg shell, water or in soil.
  4. Prepare the scraps correctly.
  5. Growth and recording
  6. Create a healthy meal from the food scraps you have grown. ( Your teacher will help you with this in the creation of a suitable recipe).

Stage 4: Technology Mandatory 7-8 Syllabus

  • TE4-1DP designs, communicates and evaluates innovative ideas and creative solutions to authentic problems or opportunities.
  • TE4-2DP plans and manages the production of designed solutions.
  • TE4-5AG investigates how food and fibre are produced in managed environments.
Task

Within this unit you will be growing your own crops therefore you will need to complete  research on how best to re-grown scraps and what crops are best to grow in this season. Before you start  please complete this booklet. It will provide some ideas on where to begin you research.

Research Ideas:

  • What grows in this season? ( Summer, Autumn, Winter or Spring)
  • How best to grow the scraps e.g water, soil, cotton wool.
  • What are some fast growing scraps and how should they be prepared before being planted.

Here are some links that may help you:

Process

1. Form a group and assign rolls:

In this step think about who you would like to be in your group and move so you can all sit together. Groups are to be between 3 and 5 member no more as the work will not be able to be divided evenly between members. Then assign roles to each member write these into a book or a piece of paper to assure each member knows their role.

2. Research:

This alone should take a considerable amount of time with members gathering information to ensure the project should be successful. This can be broken into specific parts which need to be focus on:

a) What food scraps can regrow under the correct environment?  A good start is to complete the booklet resource created and watch the linked clips.

b) How to create an environment which will allow success in the regrowth of the food scrap e.g water, soil and cotton wool.

c) How do I prepare the scraps correctly to maximize the chances of their success in growing.

d) What condition do you think they should be placed in e.g direct sunlight

3. Create an environment:

Prepare the environment that you believe the crop will grow best in e.g a jar or water or cotton wool in an egg shell.

4. Prepare the scraps correctly:

According to the research you have conducted in step 2 prepare the scraps, this may be removing seeds or removing layers.

5. Growth and Recording

This is essentially to provide information at the end recording the success or failure of the propagation and crop. This can be done various ways, however the suggested report would be to provide evidence of the process.

Ensure that along with recording the changes each week, every three days write down what you see and also take photographs. Include measurements of the growth to ensure that you are able to provide substantial evidence that can be placed in a timeline and presented at the end of this project.

6. Creation of a recipe

This will be completed in task, your teacher will give you a list of suggested appropriate recipes from which you can choose. They will be appropriate for your particular produce so as to enhance and/or highlight a meal.

Presentation of Project:

The suggested format that the project should be presented is a powerpoint presentation or a word document following the headings above, along with the description followed by your information produced for this section. Although step 5  needs to be presented in a format using a timeline to clearly indicate the progress throughout the growth of the plant ( please see the image below as an example).

Evaluation

Some questions to think about when you have finished so as to evaluate your project based assignment:

1. Was it successful? Why or why not?

2. What could have been done differently? For example more research, preparation or more time to allow the crop to grow?

3. Do you think the work was divided evenly within the group?

4. Did you complete your role in the group to the best of your ability?

5. What did you learn from this task?

Conclusion

Overall this project should have taught you some simple skills that can be used in everyday life. As well as understanding how easy it is to source and grow your own produce at home, in addition to this how it can be grown from common food scraps that are usually thrown out.
