Your assignment is to research habitats for your upcoming project.

You will use the links provided to learn about your choice of habitat.

You will record the information about the chosen habitat in your Habitat Design Journal.

You will use the journal as a step by step guide and to document the process you follow as you create a diorama about their habitat.

You will present your diorama to the class as your assessment.

During your exploration adventure, we will be asking ourselves:

  1. What things make up your chosen habitat?
  2. What kind of habitat is it?
  3. What plants and animals live in this habitat?
  4. What do the animals eat?
  5. Who is each animal’s predator?
  6. Where does each animal rest, have babies and keep safe from their predator?
  7. What does a Habitat Diorama look like?
  8. How can I show my knowledge about Habitats and the components of it in a Diorama format.
Process

*Look at the kinds of habitats you can choose from.

*Choose which habitat you wish to design your diorama around.

*Record this on page 1 of your Design Journal. Decorate this cover page “My Design Journal”

*See your teacher so they can affirm your choice. Your teacher will assign you to a project support mate.

*Record their name in the space on page 1 of your Design Journal

*Tell your project support mate which one you like most and why. Name 2 things your already know about this habitat. [Name some animals or things in this environment].

*Investigate what your diorama could look like

*Draw how you imagine this habitat looks on page 2 of the journal.

*Locate the link for this habitat and research the habitat (plants, animals, etc)

*Choose an animal from this habitat and draw a diagram of it in your journal [page 3]

*Ask your teacher to locate a web address that labels the body parts of this animal. Label the parts in your diagram.

*use the links in the animal picture and answer these questions in your journal:-

1 What does the animal eat?

2 Where does it sleep, have its babies and keep safe?

3 What other creature is its predator? Where does this predator live.?

4 Draw a picture with each answer.

*List any other components of the habitat  that you will put in your diorama [page 2].

*Create the "blueprint" of your habitat. Draw what your diorama will look like. Label each componet [page 4].

*Compare your blueprint with your project support mate - can you add more detail to your blueprint?

*With your project support mate, list some components [plants, animals, the background setting] that you will place in your diorama and write down objects that you could use to make these components. [page 5]

*consult with your teacher to confirm your planning.

*Gather your supplies and place in the tub you have been provided to keep your project organised.

*Make your 3D diorama.

*Write about the habitat you have chosen, what you placed in it and how this habitat meets the needs of the living things your placed in it. [page 6]

*Evaluate your own and your project support mate's diorama. [Use the evaluation sheets in your journal - page 7]..

*Complete the checklist then meet with your teacher discuss your presentation of the diorama. [page 8]

Conclusion

Thankyou for completing this WebQuest.

By doing so, you have met some very important learning benchmarks for Year 1:-

You have worked scientifically to learn about different habitats and how important they are to the animals and other living things that survive in these habitats. Animals live in different habitats because where they live meets their specific needs for survival. You have investigated one of these habitats and have shown your learnings through your creation of a 3D diorama in which you have placed living things that match the habitat you have created.

You have shown that you understand that living things exist in specific habitats because their needs for survival are met within this habitat. IE: they can find: shelter, a space to grow and thrive, have a family, protection from predators, food to eat and air to breathe.

You have effectively used Digital and Design Technologies to assist you to create a design solution for the project - your diorama.

You have used various art media to create the components of your project.

Reflection Task

In you design journal think about your natural habitat. List some things that need to be present so that you can survive. What do you eat? Where can you get that in your habitat. Where do you sleep/ find safety? What needs to be present in your Habitat? What poses a threat to you [your predator or dangerous aspect of your habitat] What needs to be in your habitat so that this threat can be there also?

Draw a picture of your natural habitat and label all these components.

Teacher Page

The goal of this WebQuest is intended for your students to explore different habitats and the animals that live in them. The students will have the opportunity to learn and research about different habitats then match up animals and other living things to those habitats.

This WebQuest is created for students in 1st grade to correspond with the Australian Curriculum Science content descriptions. The focus of the WebQuest is to teach students about habitats the nature of the task enables them to demonstrate capabilities in the Technologies Curriculum and the Arts Curriculum. Although this WebQuest is intended mainly for students in Year 1, its content may be adjusted to suit use across various years.

The teacher will guide students through the WebQuest and assist students when they need help.

Students will also be expected to give to, and receive support a student support mate.

Once the students learn about the animal habitats, you will guide them through the task.

Students will need to complete the Design Technologies component of the WebQuest by compiling a Design Journal and likewise, to meet the curriculum demands of the Arts, students need to create a diorama using a variety of mediums.

  • Once all animals have been matched to the correct habitat, place the paper bags and animals in a classroom center. Add some books about habitats for students to enjoy!
