The Harlem Renaissance was an intellectual, social, and artistic explosion that took place in Harlem, New York, spanning the 1920s. During the time, it was known as the "New Negro Movement", named after The New Negro, the 1925 anthology edited by Alain Locke.

The Harlem Renaissance period refers to the time from the end of World War I through the mid 1930's. According to W.E.B. Du Bois, one of the founders of the NAACP, it was a notion of "twoness," which meant that African Americans  felt split in two. According to Du Bois, this meant "...two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled stirrings, two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it form being torn asunder." During this time, a group of talented African Americans produced art, music, and literature. Like other cultural and literary movements, the Harlem Renaissance had a recurring theme: racial consciousness.
