SOUTH AFRICA

1. THE LANGUAGE

The English that is spoken in South Africa comes from the British settlers who immigrated in mass in the 1820s. They built schools where the language was based on the British grammatical system. 

How similar and different is the South African and the British accent? 
 

English is the language of public life in South Africa: government, business and media. 

It’s estimated that half of the people from South Africa know how to speak English.

2. THE HISTORY

The English language has been spoken in South Africa for over 200 years. The British first came to the southern tip of Africa (South Africa) in 1975 and occupied the Cape of Good Hope from the Dutch.

In 1803 they left the country but three years later they came back to occupy and explore the territory further. Throughout the 19th century the British were exceeded by the Africans and descendants of the original Dutch (Boers) settlers of the 17th century.

AUSTRALIA

 1. THE LANGUAGE

In Australia the national language is English. The Australian English shares the same consonants as the American and British English, the difference is how Australian native speakers pronounce the consonants.

NEW ZEALAND

1. THE LANGUAGE

English is the most spoken language in New Zealand, but not the only one. Because of the diversity of cultures living there, the country has three official languages: 

  • English

  • Māori 

  • New Zealand Sign Language

The first to arrive on the island 1,000 years ago were the Māori from Hawaiki. Despite a Dutchman was the first European to sight the country, the British were the ones who made New Zealand part of their empire.
