Heroes of Belize

Introduction

People who have been important in our country, Belize. Four recognized heroes are Antonio Soberanis, Nurse Vivian Seay, Geoge Price, and Thomas Vincent Ramos.

Task

National Heroes and Benefactors Day (previously known as Baron Bliss Day) is a public and bank holiday in Belize celebrated on March 9.

Process

 

George Cadle Price

Known commonly as the Father of the Nation. George Price was the first prime minister of Belize. He achieved Belize's independence on the 21st of September 1981 even with Guatemalan's claim over Belize territory. He formed the People's United Party. His name is used to name one of the major highways in Belize. The George Price Highway which connects Belize City to Belmopan and San Ignacio was named in his honor.

Philip S. W. Goldson 

Goldson was a political activist, newspaper editor and Belizean politician. He became a member of both PUP and UDP political parties in Belize. He worked close to those in power to help Belizean. He helped in reconstructing Corozal Town after the destruction of Hurricane Janet in 1955. His legacy lives on through the International Airport and a major Highway. In honor of his name the Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport and the Philip S.W. Goldson Highway which connects Corozal to Orange Walk and Belize City.

Thomas Vincent Ramos

He was born in 1890 and died on 13 November 1955. In 1941 Ramos began Garifuna Settlement Day for the Stann Creek District. In 1943 Toledo District joined this celebration. Later on it became a national holiday.

Ramos was a school teacher. Concerned about the systematic neglect of health facilities for Garinagu in Stann Creek, he founded the Carib Development and Sick Aid Society and later the Carib International Society

Antonio Soberanis

He was the leader of the working people of Belize. He was known to speak against rich merchants and the Belize Estate Company (BEC). He worked for a wage increase for workers loading grapefruits in Stann Creek District (Dangriga Town).

In record after having spent five weeks in jail because of his work for the rights of workers. Famously known for saying "I prefer to be a dead hero than a living coward."
