Introduction
The Philippines is a nation built on the courage, wisdom and sacrifice of many brave men and women who fought for our freedom and independence. But who are these heroes? What did they do and why are they still remembered today? In this web quest, you will step into the role of a young historian as you explore the lives and contributions of our country's most celebrated national heroes. You will discover how their actions shaped our history, our values and the nation we call home. Get ready to travel through time and uncover the stories that make us Filipino!
Task
Your mission is to research three (3) Philippine National heroes and create an informative poster or digital presentation that highlights:
- Their full name and photo
- Their birthplace and dates of birth and death
- Their most important contributions and achievements
- How they showed courage, patriotism and love for the country
- One important lesson we can learn from them today
Your final work will be presented to the class and displayed in our "Hall of Heroes"!
Process
Follow these steps carefully - you will work on groups of 4:
Step 1 - Assign Roles (5 minutes)
- Researcher 1: Jose Rizal & Apolinario Mabini
- Researcher 2: Andres Bonifacio & Emilio Aguinaldo
- Researcher 3: Melchora Aquino & Gabriela Silang
- Recorder & Designer: Organizes facts and creates the final poster/presentation
Step 2 - Gather Information (20 minutes)
Each researcher uses the websites to find the answers to these questions for each hero:
- When and where were they born?
- What was their greatest contribution to the country?
- What challenges or struggles did they face?
- How did they show love for the Philippines?
- What is one famous quote or saying from them?
Step 3 - Share & Discuss (10 minutes)
- Share your findings with your group
- Discuss: What qualities do all these heroes have in common?
- Decide on the 3 most important heroes to feature in your final work
Step 4 - Create your final work (25 minutes)
- Design your poster or digital presentation
- Include photos, dates, contributions and the "lesson we can learn"
- Make it colorful, neat and easy to read
- Add a title: "Our National Heroes: Past & Present Inspiration"
Step 5 - Prepare to Present (10 minutes)
- Practice explaining your work in 2-3 minutes
- Be ready to share: Who is your favorite hero and why?
