Historical Presentation of Harriet Tubman

Introduction

SS1H1: The student will read about and describe the life of Harriet Tubman in American History.

A. Identify the contributions made by Harriet Tubman (Underground Railroad)

I will introduce the subject by showing pictures of Harriet Tubman and seeing if any of the students know who she is and if they know what she accomplished throughout her life.

Task

The students main task in my lesson would be to create the Flip book of Harriet Tubman. I would want them to be creative as possible and draw more than just one picture on the front page.

Process

1.) I would introduce the lesson by showing the first graders pictures about Harriet Tubman to ask them if they know who she is and what she did so I am able to know what the students already know.

Ex: Can anyone tell me who this woman is?

Ex: Can anyone tell me what her major contribution is? What is she most known for?

2.) I would read "Who was Harriet Tubman" to start off my lesson to the first graders.

3.) I would ask questions throughout the book to check for understand so that I know the students are paying attention.

4.) I would have the students create a flip book where they draw a picture on the front and then create other pages about her major accomplishments such as that she led the slaves out of the underground railroad.

Evaluation

Rubric
  Unacceptable Acceptable Target

Information was correct

in the Flip Book

Flip Book was at least

5 pages long

Student was very creative in their

Flip book

I would evaluate the students depending on how true the content is and how true their information was about Harriet Tubman. I would like their flip book to be at least 5 pages long and no less so I would count off on that.

Conclusion

I would conclude the lesson by asking students what they learned today. I would give them a short quiz to make sure they all learned the same information and to make sure that they all understood Harriet Tubman's major contributions to American History.

Credits

The students would get a grade for the flip book and they would get a grade for the short quiz as well.

Teacher Page

Harriet Tubman's contributions I would most likely be looking for:

She led the slaves out of the underground railroad

Harriet Tubman took in orphans and the elderly after the civil war

During the civil war, she spied on Confederate Territory

She led her sister and two children to freedom so they did not have to be slaves
