Hello and Welcome! Are you ready to shake!?

Introduction

Welcome: Introduction to Plate Tectonics
Description: Throughout this web-quest you will find valuable information that will educate you on the theories and methods behind plate tectonics. Exciting, I know! Follow the instructions and we will see if you have a better understanding about plate tectonics after this lesson. If you have any questions feel free to email me at any point, you can find my email on the course syllabus. If at any point you are stuck on a part, skip it, but remember remember to come back to it before you submit your final worksheet.
Grade Level: 9th
Curriculum: Earth Science
Keywords: Plate tectonics, Plates, Lithosphere, asthenosphere, plate boundaries, diverging boundaries, convergent boundaries, transform fault

Task

Use these resoruces to help you answer the guided questions!

** IMPORTANT-Use your NYS Earth Science Reference Table to assist you**

2. Interactives Dynamic Earth Activtity

Complete this activity, it may take you a little bit of time. Be sure to have your NYS ESRT on hand as you will need it as a resoruce to complete this! Once you complete the entire dynamic earth activity, take the test. Take a screen shot of your test results and email to me with your short story. (Forget how to screen shot? No worries...if you are using a Mac--use Commmand-shift-4. If you are using a PC use ctrl-PrtScn)

3. PHET-Plate Tectonics!

In this activity just creat different scenarios of each type of plate boundary. Please screen shot the 3 different plate boundaries. 1. Convergent 2. Divergent 3. Transform Fault and put them in a word document. In that word document, you will need to include the following.

1. Covergent Plate Screen Shot

  • Example of a Convergent Plate Boundary
  • What type of plates did you use (Continental, Oceanic)

2. Divergent Plate Screen Shot

  • Example of a Convergent Plate Boundary
  • What type of plates did you use (Continental, Oceanic)

3. Transform Fault Boundary Screen Shot

  • Example of a Convergent Plate Boundary
  • What type of plates did you use (Continental, Oceanic)

Trail

Process

Be cool. Be Flat. and Move.

The first thing you will need to do in this web quest web quest is pick a tectonic plate. Pick one that interest you.

Once you have choosen a plate you will need to collect the following information

1. Name of your plate

2. Type of Plate that it is (Oceanic or Continental)

 Density of plate

Compostion of plate

3. What type of boundary that the plate sits on

4. Location of your Plate, which plates touch this plate

5. What kinds of geological process happen at this boundary

Once you have finished your research, write a short story and tell me all of this informaiton about your particular plate in a fun way. Make it funny, make it creative, and make it as descripitve as possible. Please be sure that you have included all of the above facts within your story. Your story should be atleast 1-2 pages long. You will need to submit your facts sheet and your short story. Your submission will be accepted via email. (Found on syllabus)

Evaluation

Here is your check list! Make sure all things are sent to me via email!

I would also like for you to print out copies for yourself to have on hand!

That way if you email get's lost in the internet world you do not have to go back and do all of these activities again.

Please only send ONE email! Let's keep organzied.

  • Dynamic Earth Activity—Task-Completion of the ENTIRE dynamic Earth Activity (Screen Shot)
  •  PHET-Plate Tectonic Activity—Task- Different Plate Boundary Scenarios
  • Individual Plate Activity-- Process-Steps 1-5
  • 2 things you learned from this lesson
  • 2 things that you still have questions about in this lesson

All of these items can be compiled into one Microsoft Word Document. So please only send one file! Be sure to include your NAME! Also, print out a copy of this document for yourself, to have as a backup! Might not be a bad idea to save it on a hard drive as well!

Conclusion

Well I hope you had fun! I hope that you have a better knowledge about different plate tectonics! If you did not finish this webquest, you may finish it for homework. I will give you exactly 2 extra days to complete the assignment out of class! The next in class meeting we have we will begin to go more in depth of plate tectonics, this is just the start! Hope you had fun!
