Introduction
"Praising your favorite sports team is one thing, but if you call the team the most incredible group of humans ever to walk the earth, then you're going overboard and indulging in hyperbole."
A hyperbole is a figure of speech that involves an exaggeration used to make a point. It is derived from the Greek word meaning "over-casting". It is a device that we employ in our day-to-day speech.
Hyperboles can be found in literature and oral communication. They would not be used in non-fiction works, like medical journals and research papers but they are perfect for fictional works, especially to add color to a character or humor to the story.
Hyperboles are comparisons, like similes and metaphors, but are extravagant and even ridiculous. It is an unreal exaggeration to emphasize a real situation.
