Industrial Revolution- With a Focus on NC

Introduction

The Industrial Revolution was a period of industrial growth and development in America. It began in 1760 and lasted until the early-mid 1800's. The purpose of this WebQuest is for you students to have a deeper understanding of what exactly the Industrial Revolution was, and in what ways exactly North Carolina was involved. You will read articles and watch videos about the Industrial Revolution. It is important for you to understand why the Industrial Revolution is such an important part of our history. The inventions that were created during this period changed our society in some pretty considerable ways!

So, let's talk about what inventions are exactly. An invention is something that is created for the first time to benefit or progress society in certain and specific ways. Inventions are a very important part of any successful society. Can you think about some of your favorite inventions? They can range from your favorite toy to your favorite food or drink to even the computer or device that you're on right now! Consider especially the ways that these inventions have benefited society.

After you study inventions and the Industrial Revolution (specifically North Carolina's biggest contribution to the Industrial Revolution), you will think of your own invention!

Task

This invention assignment will include a drawing of it, giving it a name, naming a price for it, and writing about how it works, who it will help, and what problem it solves. You can be as creative as you'd like to be! BUT, it has to be appropriate and within the realm of belief. This means that it can't include anything like sorcery or like time traveling. However, you can think a bit more futuristically, and you are encouraged to think outside-of-the-box! Try to think specifically about what needs society has right now, and how something you invent could help reduce those needs. Try to make an invention that also appeals to as many different types of people as possible. The exact rubric for this assignment is in the Evaluation section of the WebQuest!

If you have questions about the kind of inventions that you can create or anything else, don't hesitate to ask me!

Process

This is a short YouTube video that introduces the Industrial Revolution in pretty good detail. You'll enjoy watching it!

This article will take you through the good, the bad, and the ugly of the Industrial Revolution. After reading this, you will have a more meaningful understanding of what the Industrial Revolution was really like. Remember that some of those young kids who had to work in factories lived in communities not far from us.

You can watch one, two, or all three of the videos above to learn about the Wright brothers, who were the inventors of the airplane, which is North Carolina's most notable invention created during the Industrial Revolution!

I want you to go to page 4 of this article. There, you will learn about what exactly an invention is, and why they are important. Then, go to the bottom of page 5 and read about the process of inventing. This will teach you about the process that I want you to go through as you think of your own invention!

Skip ahead to page 7 if you are interested in starting an "Invention Club"! If there are three or more students who are interested in this, I can help you start it. :)

Evaluation

At the end of this WebQuest, you should have a good understanding about what the Industrial Revolution was all about, and what role North Carolina played in it. You should have also completed your own creative invention.

The rubric for this assignment is below:

Your Invention Rubric:
          #  (Accomplished)         !  (Proficient)

        $   (Weak)

Creative Drawing of Invention

Creative Name of Invention

Price of Invention

How Invention Works

Who Will Benefit From Invention

How They Will Benefit From it

What Problem it Solves

A "$" is the best score you can get, and it basically means that you did a great job including that part in detail. A "!" means you included the part, but not in detail. A "#" means you did not include the part. You can use the graphic organizer that I gave you during our last class together to write and complete all of the criteria on this rubric. :) Try your best to include every part of the rubric!

Conclusion

The next time we come to class together, you will each present your inventions to the rest of the class by describing to the class everything about the invention that you wrote on your invention graphic organizer. You will then each be given a certain amount of pretend-money to spend. After each student presents their invention, you will be given the opportunity to purchase whatever inventions you want/can buy with the money you have!

To conclude the class, we will have a contest for the "most helpful invention"! For this contest, we will all submit a written vote of the invention that we think would be most helpful to society, and a brief 1-3 sentence explanation of why.
