Introduction
Have you ever played matching card games like Snap of Concentration? These games can be played with ordinary cards or special cards with pictures or words on them.
You have been chosen to invent your own clever card game that involves matching daily activities, like eating lunch, with analog times, digital times and times in words.
Your will need to construct a box to store your game in.
Have fun creating and designing your new card game. What will you put on the cards?
Task
Before you start designing your cards you will need to learn the following math concepts:-
- Clocks – past the hour (MG6)
- Clocks – to the hour (MG7)

Understanding the Investigation
STEP 1: Read and Plan
You can log on to imaths and Select 2 It's on the cards Investigation.

1. Make sure you understand the meanings of: comments, Snap, Concentraion, evaluation.
2. Read and discuss the rubric (in files)
3. Download your investigation plan (in files). This will help you with the organisation and understanding of the investigation.
STEP 2: How do card games work?
Play a game of Snap or Concentration. Count the cards. Discuss the rules. Decide how many cards you will neeed to make your own fun game. Decide what size and shape your cards will be.
Using Math
STEP 3 Create an activity time sheet
In groups, use BLM 2.1 (in files) Activity time sheet, to list some of the activities you do throughout the day. Write them in the order they happen. Write the time for each activity.
STEP 4: Make your cards and write the rules
Make a set of four cards for each activity on your list. You could use BLM 2.2 (in files). Blank card shapes, as a template.
Each set should include:
- one card naming the activity
- one card with a clock face use BLM 2.3, Analogue clocks (in files)
- one card showing digital time
- one card with the time written in words
The aim of the game is to match the times and the activity. Write a set of rules for your game.
STEP 5: Play your games.
Use your cards and Activity time sheet to play your game. Swap cards with another group. Play each other's games. Write a few comments for the other group about their game.
STEP 6 Make your box
Trace around your cards and draw a net that would fold to make a box that fits your cards. Construct and decorate the box.
Reasoning and reporting
STEP 7 How well did your cards work?
Evaluate your game. Write two good things about your card game. Write two things you could do to improve your game. Write two comments you received about your game from another group.
Hand in your cards, rules, box, Activity time sheet and evaluation.
