Khan Academy and LearnZillion - Dividing Fractions

Introduction

You've got the addition and subtraction skills down pat, good for you!  Now it's time to multiply and divide.  Chances are you already know how to multiply, so most of this lesson will focus on dividing fractions.  To get a brief outline of your job, head to the Task tab.

Task

We will start with a brief review of fraction multiplication and then you will work on dividing fractions using videos from LearnZillion and Khan Academy and practice problems from Khan Academy and IXL.  Head over to the Process tab to get yourself started!

Process

Task 1: Multiplication at Khan Academy

  1. Log in to Khan Academy.  This will save your points and progress towards badges.
  2. Watch this video on multiplication: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/pre-algebra/fractions-pre-alg/multiplying-fractions-pre-alg/v/multiplying-fractions.  Take notes over the example.
  3. Answer 5 practice questions correctly at https://www.khanacademy.org/math/pre-algebra/fractions-pre-alg/multiplying-fractions-pre-alg/e/multiplying_fractions_0.5.  Record both the questions AND answers on your worksheet.

Task 2: Division at LearnZillion

  1. Log in to LearnZillion.  The following video has been assigned to your account, but you may also use the link below to access it.
  2. Watch the video about dividing fractions: https://learnzillion.com/lessons/3594-computing-quotients-using-the-fractions-division-rule.  They will show you division using a model and the standard method of dividing fractions.  Take notes on your worksheet.

Task 3: Division at Khan Academy

  1. Watch Example 1: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/fractions/div-fractions-fractions/v/another-dividing-fractions-example and take notes over the example on your worksheet.
  2. Watch Example 2: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/fractions/div-fractions-fractions/v/dividing-fractions-example and take notes over the example on your workhseet.
  3. Practice dividing fractions at https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/fractions/div-fractions-fractions/e/dividing_fractions_1.5.  Answer 5 questions correctly.  Record both the questions AND answers on your worksheet.

Task 4: IXL

  1. Finally, go to http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-6/divide-fractions to get in even more practice.  Answer 10 questions correctly.  Record both the questions AND answers on your worksheet.
Evaluation

For your evaluation on this activity, you will create a series of tweets (which you won't actually post) explaining how to multiply and divide fractions.  Tweets are 140 characters (letters, numbers, and spaces) or less.  You need to create enough tweets to successfully explain BOTH multiplication and division.
