The Family

Introduction

Diverse family forms are found in the Caribbean. These forms are not only the result of our past but are also influenced by current situations such as the impact of industrialization and urban life on society.

There is no single definition of the term ‘family’, as the concept and structure of families varies greatly from culture to culture. One definition is: A social unit created by birth, marriage and other sexual relationships or adoption living together in a single household. The family is the most basic social unit in a society and performs some very important functions.
