Lesson on photosynthesis

Introduction

Guiding Questions: 

  1. Does the student understand the process of photosynthesis?
  2. Do they know the phases, and can they name them?
  3. Can they name the key concepts for it?
  4. Does the student know how photosynthesis works in a plant? 

Learning Objective:

  1. Students remember the process of photosynthesis, and they're able to recall the process. 
  2. Students understand photosynthesis, and they know the key concepts. 
  3. Students know how this applies to everyday life. 
  4. Students can compare how it works in different lighting and can create visual concepts of it through art, using their creativity. 

Task

In this project, the students will be divided into groups of three. These students will get a sprout each, and they will take the plants home. One student will put it in artificial lighting, one will put it in sunlight, and one will put it in no light at all. Throughout the next three weeks, students will take pictures and measure the plant every day. By the end of three weeks, the students will make a 15-slide presentation, five slides for each student. The presentation program they'll be using is Canva Magic Studio. 

Process

Instructions: 

  1. Groups of three take home three sprouts: one in artificial light, one in sunlight, and one in no light. 
  2. Over the next three weeks, take photos every day of the sprouts. 
  3. Note any changes, any color differences, and measure them. 
  4. Make a table for it as well, to jot down the color and measurements. 
  5. At the end of the three weeks, put together a presentation and state how photosynthesis affected the sprout. 

Roles: 

Project Manager: This person is in charge of starting the slideshow with the introduction slide. They make sure everyone is on task and that the project gets done on time. You will present in class. 

Researchers: Two other people from the project will come together and gather info about the process of photosynthesis. You may cite your sources. They will help present along with the project as well. 

Students will use a shared document for the next three weeks. Through creativity and what they've learned, this is how they make their presentation. Through asynchronous communication.

Evaluation

At the end of the project, the group can earn up to 75 points, which is a 100. The students will be graded on creativity (if it's neat and well done), how informative the slideshow is, and how they present the project. The students will also get their own rubric to grade how their partners did on the project.

Conclusion

Overall, this Webquest is to help students understand photosynthesis better. Through this group project in class, students will be able to use their different learning styles and collaborate. This can also push students out of their comfort zones to make new friends. Through this project by the end of this project, students will be able to understand photosynthesis and how the cycle works in depth with the knowledge through hands-on activities.
