Let's go to Disney World!

Introduction

Hello! You and your family are planning a one week trip to Disney World over summer vacation (June, July, or August). Your family consists of 4 people [2 adults and 2 children] (you pick the children's ages) and it is your job to plan a trip they will never forget!!!

Task

Please create an itinerary outlining your 7 day trip! The purpose of this WebQuest is to have students build skills with time management, cost awareness, social skills-working well with others and presenting effectively.

You have been given a budget of $7000 to book the hotel, buy park hopper passes, airfare, breakfast/lunch/dinner reservations, and whatever else is needed for this vacation.

You will decide:

which flight you will take (you can fly out of Bloomington, IL or Peoria, IL) to Orlando, FL

which hotel you will be staying at

which restaurants you will be eating at (for breakfast, lunch, and dinner)

and finally what activities you will want to do!

Your family is pretty much leaving things in your hands, but they do have some specific things they want to do while on this trip. They are expecting to see every park at least once (there are 4 parks), take a trip to Disney Springs, and want to have one character dining experience (that can be either breakfast, lunch, or dinner)!

You must create a detailed itinerary describing what is going to be done on each day. This is to be done on Google Slides! Once you create your itinerary on Google Slides you will need to share it with me. Your slides need to be organized and outline each days activities! You need to explain your vacation in detail with estimated prices, dates and whatever else you think is needed to prove that you have planned the best possible Walt Disney World Vacation!

Your presentation must include:

-Detailed itinerary of what you did each day (remember each park needs to be visited at least once, along with Disney Springs and a character dining experience.)

-All reservations (hotel, airline, breakfast, lunch, and dinners, shows, etc) including the estimated cost and times.

Questions to be answered in your group presentation:

-       Which character dining experience have you chosen for the family? why?

-       Why did you choose to go to Disney the time you did? (weather, less crowds, etc.)

-       Did you plan any other fun dining experiences? If so, which ones and why?

*Something to think about:

Photos: Many rides take photos, which act as good souvenirs, are you going to suggest that money be set-aside in the budget to purchase these if they’re wanted?

There are many different options to consider when purchasing park hopper passes. Some have the water park option; others have no expiration date, which may be good in the long run. Carefully consider the options, but remember, anyone you choose will affect your budget in some sense!

Process

Step 1:

You will be paired up into groups of 2 for this assignment. (names will be drawn from hats) Once you have been paired up, you will break off and discuss what each of your responsibilities and roles are for the project. The responsibilities for this assignment should be divided evenly and each partner should be making equal contributions. When giving your presentation, you are going to describe what your role(s) were in the planning process.

Step 2:

Once you and your partner have divided up the research and responsibilities, it’s time to start planning the Walt Disney World Family Vacation! Remember the specific things you need to include in the itinerary, along with your budget. Also, remember to add in some must see things to do on the itinerary! (looking at vacation blogs may be helpful for this part)

Step 3:

After you have gathered all of your information and research and have the vacation planned out, it is time to create your electronic presentation, which will be given in front of the class. Your presentation should show estimated dates and prices. (A good way to show these types of things may be a chart or graph!) Additionally, you each are responsible for a 1 page typed report stating your opinion on the importance of budget making and organization when planning a family vacation.

Conclusion

I hope this webquest assignment helped you to realize that math is used in everyday life. Also, how important it is to stick to a budget and remain organized in order to have an efficient plan.  You should feel more comfortable working within a budget and planning out an itinerary. Skills such as these will help you with numerous things down the road, so you can finally say you did something in school that you will actually use! Who knows, maybe you can even plan YOUR next family vacation!

Students will be acting as a travel agent/vacation planner, and will be asked to plan a 7-day/ 6-night vacation to Walt Disney World for 2 adults and 2 children. They will be given a $7000 budget to abide by when booking hotels, making food reservations, purchasing park passes, and more! They will have to use the internet to look up hotels, airfare, and look up prices for the trip being planned.

Teacher Introduction

This assignment was designed in order to make students more comfortable with working within budgets, planning and organizing. Also, it was designed to prove that math is used it everyday life and make them more content with using it in everyday life. It was designed because I want students to go home and say they what they did in school that day, is something that they will actually use in real life, for the rest of their life.
