Let's go through the great rooms of the Hermitage!

Introduction

This WebQuest is dedicated to one of the most famous museums in the world - the Hermitage. It is situated in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. There is an enormous art collection in this museum. But it's not only a museum, it's a great palace of Russian tsars.

Look at this magnificent palace! It is the Hermitage - one of the greatest museums in the world.  I offer you to go though its wonderful rooms full of treasures which had belonged in previous centuries to Russian tsars.

If you are mesmerized by the photo of the palace, let's begin learning more about the fairy tale called the Hermitage.

You will be to take up collecting information about the place where it is built, history of the palace, its former owners, rich art collections, opening hours, how to get there, guided tours and what you would like to add according to your taste.

I hope you'll enjoy your little trip around the State Hermitage Museum.

Task

Your main goal will be to make a guided tour about the Hermitage. It must be interesting for those who live in Saint-Petersburg and for those who have never been there.

First you will be devided into three groups.  Within these groups each of you should   choose any item you prefer. When the individual task has been already done, your group reunites and starts preparing a presentation about the whole topic. Every member of the groups must contribute to their common work as much as he can.

If you have already been inspired with the exciting views let's start working!     Good luck!

Process

Now I'll tell you how you should organize your work to make a wonderful presentation. Follow my advice and everything will be easy and interesting.

Look at these magnificent sights once again and you'll understand that  rather long time ago the palace was a residence of Russian tsars (kings in European tradition). When it was and who were its owners you must search in your project.

If you use the links I offer you here, you'll get enough information for the questions about history of the Winter Palace (the first name of the building).

  • the architect of the building
  • the first owner of the palace
  • the members of the royal family who lived there

If you find something curious except these items, it would be wonderful. Some extra material never spoils the project.

Now, if you have already done the beginning, continue collecting necessary information. As the second step you have to answer the question:

When did the Winter palace become the State Hermitage Museum?

The same link will help you.

http://www.hermitagemuseum.org/htmlEn/05/hm5_7_3.html

If the question has been already answered, it's time to go through the rooms and exhibitions of the Hermitage. Your task is to tell briefly about all permanent exhibitions which are represented in the museum but after you have done it, choose any you liked best and describe it in detail.

  • Prehistoric art
  • Antiquity
  • Western European art
  • The Arsenal
  • Oriental art
  • Russian culture
  • Numismatics
  • The Treasure gallery

These are the names of the permanent exhibitions. There are temporary ones, too. If you are interested in them it's your opportunity to show your interest in the project. Go by the mentioned link and you'll see exciting, charming, mesmerizing, fascinating interiors.

Pay your special attention to the famous pictures which are represented in the museum. Their authors are well-known all over the world: Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Rubens and others.

At last you have done the most difficult part of the work. However, I'm sure not everybody knows how to get to the museum. As the last step you must find the information about the transport.  Going by the same link you can get a lot of other information concerning the main topic.

Conclusion

So now, you've solved a rather difficult task to tell about the great museum which you probably have never seen in your real life. Of course, your excursion can't be on an expert's level, but the most important in this project was to learn as much as you could on the topic. If you have achieved the main goal you are smarties and I'm glad I could show you the way to explore the place loved by so many people from all over the world.

If you are into art I advice to go further and open next pages in a wonderful world of paintings, sculptures, treasures and other masterpieces.
