Math for Donuts

Introduction

Who wants donuts!!

Our class has been working on improving our math skills this year. We have been dividing, multiplying, adding, and subtracting. Your hard work has not gone unnoticed and because of it, here is an opportunity to earn yummy donuts! Your group will have a chance to enjoy delicious donuts...on a budget! Oops, did I mention the catch? Well, there's also a catch. Donuts on a budget will be a fun experience as each group will determine the total bill payment, divide the bill amongst the group members, and determine the tax on the order. Also, to add a little fun, the group needs to use their skills to make the correct change. Each group may not use all of the allowed amount. I hope you're ready to use your math skills for delicious donuts!

Task

For this webquest, your teacher will divide the class into groups of 4. Each group will be given a budget and menu to Krispy Kreme. Each group will need to stay within budget in order to successfully "math for donuts". The groups will determine the sales tax on the order, divide the budget within the members of the group, and make the correct change, as each group may not use the entire budget. The groups will use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and lots of division to complete this webquest! Delicious donuts on the way!!

Process

Each of the groups will be given a Krispy Kreme menu. Each group should decide on the role of each member before going donut shopping!

Multiplying Taxer

"Subtracting Change Maker"

Directions:

1. Each group of 4 will be given $25 to spend on delicious donuts!

2. The Team should click on the menu below to decide what they will order!

3. Each member should choose donuts they want and also a drink. The Order Taker should record what everyone in the group is interested in, along with the prices. The Donut Divider should have split the total cost ($25) amongst the group members and given each member a personal budget. Then as a group, you will add everyone's total together to make sure it is within the group budget of $25. The Order Taker should pass the individual orders to the Donut Divider.

4. You will then add your individual cost up and give it to the Multiplying Taxer. The Multiplying Taxer will calculate the sales tax for the orders using the sales tax finder equation given below. Use the sales tax for Lebanon, TN from the http://www.sale-tax.com/Tennessee website. Please show your work and record your answer on your blank paper.

Example:

Tax= 9.250%

Total order= $21.00

$21 x .0925=1.94- this means, if the total order is $21.00, the tax on the order will be $1.94.

5. The "Subtracting Change Maker" has the job of making sure the Multiplying Taxer has done the correct math. The "subtracting Change Maker" will then subtract the group's budget of $25 and the total price spent on the donuts. Then, the "Subtracting Change Maker" should record the change.

**Want extra credit? Have your "Subtracting Change Maker" record the number of each coins the group receives from the change, along with any bills.

6. When your group finishes the Webquest, you will turn in all of your work. Make sure if your group has used multiple sheets of paper to work through the Webquest, all pages are turned in. Everyone's name should be on each sheet of paper for credit.

Focus :

The purpose of this Webquest is to give students another way to put their math skills to practice. We have been extremely focused on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in class. This webquest is a way to use these skills in a real life situation, while also working in a group.

This webquest is made for third and fourth graders who love to learn and who want a challenge! The students will be placed into small groups. They will order donuts, and use their math skills to figure out the correct change the employee should hand them back.
