Mean, Median, and Mode

Introduction

Welcome to the Webquest where you learn more about the world of math! Do you ever need some way to distribute your candy flavors or find what M&M appears most often? With mean, median, and mode, you can figure out how to find all of these! In this Webquest, you will understand the mean, median, and mode and apply it to the following activities!

Mean, median, and mode tutorial video

5.DS.2 You will understand and use center (mean and median) and frequency (mode) to describe a data set.

Brook Doss, Nikki Watts, Daniel Dail, and Keith Dell

Task

First, you will create cookies and find the mean, median, and mode.

Second, you will create a farm and repeat this process again.

Process

Cookie Creation

For the first task, you will be given construction paper, scissors, and glue to create your cookie. You will get to put your favorite toppings on it and create three different cookies with their unique amount of toppings. After creating the cookies, you will find the mean, median, and mode of all the toppings.

Animal Cracker Farm

For the second task, you will be given 25 animal crackers to create your farm with and will be able to pick what animals you want on your farm. Once you do this, you will have to find the mean, median, and mode of your animals on the farm. You will have to find the mean of each species, the median of all of the animals lined up from their smallest group to their largest group, and the mode of all of the combined animals.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on their performance, time, understanding of concepts, organization, and behavior.

Conclusion

As an activity to gain more of an understanding of mean, median, and mode; try and find an example at home of mean median and mode that you find outside of class (how many shoes are in your house, how many boxes of cereal, etc).
