Introduction

                            West Virginia,     wv    Wild and Wonderful!

Whether you were born here, moved here, or just go to school here - WV is a part of your life. Follow this WebQuest to learn a little more about the state. You will be surprised just how much WV has to offer!

 

Task

Your mission is to follow the links in the following section and take a virtual tour of some of the interesting facts, places, people, and history of the state of West Virginia. You will need access to the Internet, a piece of paper, a pencil, and colored pencils (if you would like to add some color to the drawing tasks).

Process

Step 1: 

Click on the link https://statesymbolsusa.org/states/united-states/west-virginia and look through the symbols of WV. Click on your favorite symbol and read how it is associated with WV. On your paper, write Step 1 and draw and/or describe the symbol you chose.
BONUS: What does the phrase "Montani Semper Liberi" mean? 

Step 2:

Click on the link https://worldpopulationreview.com/states/west-virginia-population/cities/. On your paper, write Step 2 and answer the following questions. Using the first number (2020 pop - meaning the population in that city in the year 2020), what city in WV has the most residents? How many people live in that city? How many cities are there in WV (hint - scroll alllllll the way to the bottom and see what number the last city is)? Find Cameron - what number is Cameron and how many people live there? (this one surprised me!) 
BONUS: How many more people live in the biggest city of WV than in Cameron? 

Step 3:

Click on the link http://www.wvlegislature.gov/educational/kids_page/fun_facts.cfm. On your paper, write Step 3 and answer the following question. Out of the 10 fun facts of WV, which was the most interesting to you? 

Step 4:

Watch the following video - 

On your paper, write Step 4 and answer the following questions. If you could build a hidden room in your house that no one would know about, where would you put it and what would you use it for? Draw a picture and/or describe your hidden room.

Step 5:

Click on the link https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/west-virginia/famous-people-wv/ and look through 15 famous people of WV. On your paper, write Step 5 and tell me which one of those people you would like to meet and why. 

Step 6:

Click on the link https://www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/nrgbridge.htm and look through the information about the New River Gorge Bridge. Scroll to the bottom and click on the picture galleries of the Bridge, Bridge Day, and the Construction of the Bridge. Then watch the following video about Bridge Day - trust me, you will LOVE it! On your paper, write Step 6 and tell me if you would ever jump off the New River Gorge Bridge on Bridge Day (I wouldn't!!!!!).

Step 7: 

Click on the link https://historycollection.co/18-photos-folkloric-feud-hatfields-mccoys/, read the story, and look at the pictures of the Hatfield and McCoy Feud. On your paper, write Step 7 and answer the following questions. What is the definition of a feud (it was one of our vocabulary words), and how do you think the Hatfields and McCoys could have stopped their feud?

Step 8: 

Click on the link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_governors_of_West_Virginia and scroll down to the list of governors of WV. Write Step 8 on your paper and answer the following questions. Who was the first governor of WV? Who was governor the year you were born (hint: look at the years the person was governor...remember the dash means "through")? Who is the current governor?

 

Evaluation

Final Exam: On your paper write the answers to these very important questions about WV and remember them always - 

1. What state was WV once a part of?

2. What was the date that WV became its own state? (month, day, AND year)

3. How many counties are in WV?

4. What is the capital of WV?

5. Where was the first capital of WV?

BONUS QUESTION: What is the name of the line that marks the end of the Northern States and the beginning of the Southern States? (hint: it is down near New Martinsville, and there is a BBQ restaurant in Moundsville named after it)
