Night and Day, Why Do We Have Them?

Introduction

In this WebQuest, you will be pretending that you are an astronaut in a space shuttle. You will be orbiting earth for a couple days. The only thing you can do is observe the day and night cycle of earth. In your own words, I would like for you to tell me what you have observed during this time. Did you see the sunset over the mountains? Did you see the sun glare in your face? What do you think is happening and how do you feel in comparison to how we see things on earth.

Task

I can explain how the orbit of the Earth and sun cause observable patterns: a. day and night; b. changes in length and direction of shadows over a day with 90% accuracy. Students will create a diary based on the observations made in space. You have observed looking out the window of the space craft while in orbit around the Earth. You experienced night and day in space. Describe how day and night are different on Earth. What did you see in space? Students will watch the following videos and fill in the blanks in their diaries. https://video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?fr=yhs-rotz-001&hsimp=yhs-001&hspart=rotz&p=video+on+astronaut+in+space+watching+night+and+day+in+space#id=7&vid=cc4433aa77e157707dc13beec642606b&action=click

The Format of the Diary Entries:

Dear Diary,

After the shuttle lifted off from the flight line of the space station it was clear to me that things weren't going to be the same. When up in space I observed the following things________________________________________________________

Night and day seemed to be different than when I was on Earth. When I was on Earth day and night looked like_____________________. In space day and night looks_________

When I look out the window of the shuttle I see the Earth, Sun and moon. As I watch them they are moving_______________. (Add any extra descriptions)

Process

Students will read, Why Do We Have Night and Day?, by Alix Wood. This book explores the relationship between the earth and the sun. Students will learn how and why earth orbits the sun. Students will answer the following questions: Do other planets have night and days? Where do the stars go in the daytime?

Click on this link, https://www.dkfindout.com/us/space/solar-system/day-and-night/ and watch the video. After the video has been watched, click on the day and night quiz. Write the questions and answers on a sheet of paper and turn in.

Students will use the prompt in the task section to fill out their diaries.

Written Product Sentences do not flow and do not make sense. Student's hand writing is not neat.  Only reflects a beginning level of performance. Sentences make sense and flows. Hand writing is not neat.  Reflects development and movement toward mastery of performance. Isn't written in neat hand writing but reflects mastery of performance. Written neatly and flows very nice. Reflects the highest level of performance.
Grammar and Spelling Organization Formatting Grammar, spelling, organization, and formatting need considerable work. Reflects a beginning level of performance.  Organization, spelling, and grammar need work. Reflects development and movement toward mastery of performance. One or two grammar or spelling mistakes. Reflects mastery of performance.  No grammar or spelling mistakes. Reflects the highest level of performance.
Understanding Did not use and key words to explain space experience and does not have a full understanding of day and night.  Reflects a beginning level of performance. Only uses one key word, but does not use it to explain the experiences inside of the shuttle.  Reflects development and movement toward mastery of performance. Uses more than one of the key words.  Reflects mastery of performance. Uses all key words that were required and used them to make sense in the diary entry. Reflects the highest level of performance.

Conclusion

This is where we conclude the lesson. I would like for you to think about night and day, and we are going to reflects on the things that happened. I would like for you to think about the key terms we have used in this lesson: revolve, rotate, revolution, rotation, spin, axis, day, and night. I would like each of you to write one sentence explaining the relationship between the sun, earth, day, and night. Students will be put in groups of three to discuss what they learned today and what they would want to learn about in future lessons.

I used http://questgarden.com/search/webquest_results.php?language=en&searchcriteria=anyword&descwords=night+and+day&searchfield=descrip&search=Search and used some ideas in my WebQuest. I provided different resources for the students. I also used the following video for the students to use while filling in their diaries.

I used the following standards during my WebQuest:

4.ESS1: Earth’s Place in the Universe

2) Use a model to explain how the orbit of the Earth and sun cause observable patterns: a. day and night; b. changes in length and direction of shadows over a day.

4.FL.VA.7c Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases, including those that signal precise actions, emotions, or states of being and that are basic to a particular topic

I think that this WebQuest provides the students with activities that will successfully provide the students with what they need to understand the process of night and day. During this WebQuest, I will provide students with differentiation by providing the students with one on one time. I will guide and aid students that need it. I will assess the students by reading their diaries and sentences including the key words. If students are able to answer them correctly, I know that the WebQuest has provided the students with an understanding of night and day.  I used a website for the students to watch an additional video and write down the questions and answers of the quiz on the website. I believe that this WebQuest will be successful in the aid of the learning of night and day. It provides the students with visuals and facts about the process of night and day.
