MUSIC COUNTERCULTURE AND SUBCULTURE

Introduction

Protest, reaction and drugs were the main ingredients of the music scene in the 60s and the 70s. Thousands of anti-Vietnam hippies gathered at Woodstock to listen to musicians who represented their counterculture movement; the next decade saw the rising of the punk subculture whose motto was “Never trust a hippie” (Sex Pistols); the relation between drugs and music evolved according to the types of drugs that were used by artists and the different reasons why they used them.
