Introduction
The Freedom Writer's Diary is a collection of journal entires written by students living in Long Beach California. Most of the studetns didn't live normal teenage lives due to gang violence and racial tension. Thier english techer Mrs. Gruwell taught them to love each other and made them realize their full potential. Many of the students grew to be the first person in their family to graduate high school and go to college.
Task
During the Freedom Writer's Journey to becoming the best students that they could be they met Meip Gies, the woman who hid Anne Frank and her family from the Nazi's. When Meip Gies visits their school, one of the students tells her that she is his hero. In reply to this student Meip Gies said that the students were the real heroes, and not her. During this unit you will research a modern day hero who is making a differnece in his or her community or even the world. You will acomplish this using valid webisites, answering questions and compleating other activities such as word searches. This will help you understand the importance of modern day heroes.
