Introduction

Introduction to Vertebrate Zoology
As intelligent beings we are always wanting more knowledge than what we currently have. We want to know more about math, history, and most importantly science. There are so many interesting subjects within science itself. An examply of an interesting subjects is zoology, and even withing zoology there are subcategories. One of the most studied subcategory is vertebrate zoology. It is interesting to us because we are surrounded with vertebrates, but also because we are vertebrates.
Process
Chordates
1. What four features do all chordates have at some point in their lives?
2. When do these four features appear for humans and most other vertebrates?
3. Chordates include ____________________?
4. What are the three subphyla of chordates?
Vertebrates
1. What characteristics make the vertabrates special?
2. How many species of vertebrates have been described?
3. How many years have vertebrates existed on this earth?
4. The first vertebrates were jawless. How many years later did jawed vertebrates appear?
The Five Classes
1. What characteristics are used when classifying vertebrates?
2. What are the five classes that make up vertebrates?
Fish
1. What characteristics define fish?
2. How many described species of fish are there?
Amphibians
1. What makes a vertebrate an amphibian?
2. What are the three orders of amphibians?
Reptiles
1. What features must a reptile have?
2. What are some examples of reptiles?
Birds
1. What features make a bird a bird?
2. How many bird species are there?
Mammals
1. What three characteristics do all mammals share?
2. What are the smallest mammals and how much can they weigh?
