Vertebrates and Invertebrates

Introduction

There are many animals in the world.  We classify these animals into two major groups.  These two groups are VERTEBRATES and INVERTEBRATES. After completing this activity, you will understand the difference between a vertebrate and an invertebrate. You will also be able to list some of the similarities and differences between the two groups of animals.   You will be able to identify examples of each group.

Task

During this activity, you will complete the following tasks:

1. Define Vertebrate and Invertebrate.

2. You will complete a venn diagram to compare some of the differences and similarities between vertebrates and invertebrates (at least 3 for each category).

3. You will identify 10 examples of vertebrates and 10 examples of invertebrates.

4. Find out: Are we vertebrates or invertebrates?

Process

1. For the first task you will define Vertebrate and Invertebrate. This information can be found on this site:

2. Next you will create a venn diagram to compare some of the differences and similarities between vertebrates and invertebrates (at least 3 for each category). Use the website below to find out how they are the same and different!

3.  Identify 10 examples of vertebrates and 10 examples of invertebrates.  Draw and label your examples. Check out these sites to help you:

4.  Next, you will answer the question: Are people vertebrates or invertebrates? Give reasons to support your answer.

Evaluation

INVERTEBRATES AND VERTEBRATES WEBQUEST RUBRIC

4 I completed each task and showed a great understanding of vertebrates and invertebrates and I could teach others.  I gave a complete definition of vertebrates and invertebrates.  I gave more than 3 similarities and differences for each category in my venn diagram.  I gave more than 10 examples of both vertebrates and invertebrates and drew pictures for each.  I gave a clear explanation why people are vertebrates or invertebrates.
3 I completed each task and showed a good understanding of vertebrates and invertebrates.  I gave a definition of vertebrates and invertebrates.  I gave 3 similarities and differences for each category in my venn diagram.  I gave 10 examples of both vertebrates and invertebrates and drew pictures for each.  I gave an explanation why people are vertebrates or invertebrates.
2 I completed most of the tasks and showed some understanding of vertebrates and invertebrates.  I gave part of a definition of vertebrates and invertebrates.  I gave 2 similarities and differences for each category in my venn diagram and drew some pictures.  I gave less than 10 examples of both vertebrates and invertebrates.  I answered if people were vertebrates or invertebrates, but  I did not explain my answer.
1 I did not complete all of the tasks and showed little understanding of vertebrates and invertebrates.  I did not give a clear definition of vertebrates and invertebrates.  I gave 1 or less similarities and differences for each category in my venn diagram and did not draw pictures.  I gave less than 10 examples of both vertebrates and invertebrates.  I did not answer if people were vertebrates or invertebrates.
Conclusion

Congratulations!

You are now an animal classifying expert!  You know what INVERTEBRATES and VERTEBRATES are!
