Task
You will read several personal narratives of slaves on a journey on the Underground Railroad. You will also read about facts regarding the Underground Railroad on the interenet. From your readings, you will analyze the information for a general knowledge of what occured on the Underground Railroad by taking notes. You will take your notes and synthesize them to create an person on the Underground Railroad. From this person's perspective you will write a journal of your journey on the Underground Railroad.

Process
- Read in guided reading groups and independently,
- Participate in discussions and take notes on a Who, What, Where, Why, When organizer
- Read from the following websites and fill in the Who, What, Where, Why, and When organizer. Turn the organizer in to your teacher. http://teacher.scholastic.com/writewit/tguide/5doubleyous.pdf
- When you get your organizer back, you may begin your rough draft of your personal narrative on the Underground Railroad.
- Information to be included in your narratives: (will also be on rubric)
A) Describe who you are. Where do you live? What do you do? What is your name? Who do you work for? How old are you? Tell about your family if you have any, and also about your master.
B) What are the conditions like where you live and work. What is it that makes you want to escape.
C) Describe your escape and how you go about it. Who is traveling with you? What path do you take? Who is helping you? Where are you going? Are there risks and dangers?
D)Conclusion: Do you make it or not? Describe your feelings concerning the end of your journey. What lies ahead for you?
- Find a partner to share your narrative with. Each person in the pair must write two good comments about the writing and one "growing" comment.
- Turn the rough draft into the teacher.
- Participate in a small teacher conference for editing.
- Write the final draft on google docs and add any additional creative images to your work. Submit to your teacher.
