The great journey’s of exploration

Introduction

After learning about very ancient Australian history, have you been wondering how this country came to be settled? That is what we have been working towards in this unit of work – why and how was Australia colonised?

Today you will learn about one of many European men who were involved in the discovery of this land. This man’s name is Captain James Cook. You just watched a short clip about him so you already know a little bit about him. But today you will be gathering information and learning about him a bit more!

Task

Theindigenous people need your help! Captain James Cook has just arrived on the
shores of your tribe in Sydney Cove, you and your people do not know who they are
or what they are doing here. It is your chance to do a bit of research and find
out some vital information about these new people and whether or not they
should be allowed to stay or not.

Process

In order to complete this task you will need to search the web for information about Captain James Cook. You will present your findings in a chosen way – you may want to make a short information video, you may want to make an animation, you may want to blabberize Captain Cooks face, you have many different ways you can present your findings. Just pass it by your research leader (Miss Breese) and she will be able to let you know if it is appropriate or not!

Here are some suggested things you might want to find out about Captain Cook:

  • Who was the explorer? His name, where he was from, and what he looked like
  • When did he explore?
  • What is his story? Why was he exploring
  • Where did he want to go? Where he left from, and where he went
  • How did he navigate? How many ships, and how did he know where he was going?
  • What was shipboard life like?
  • How did the indigenous feel? How did this impact on them?
  • What impacts did the exploration have? On trade, wealth, opening up routes for other countries etc.

Here is where you should start looking for information:

www.google.com

You may want to search things such as: Captain James Cook for kids, The great journeys of exploration for kids.

By writing ‘for kids’ the information given to you will be easier to understand!

The people of your tribe have trust in you to learn a bit more about this man and to see what he is really like. Good luck!

Teacher Page

The Great journeys of exploration are the main focus of this Webquest, specifically focussing on the colonisation of Australian. Students will explore the internet to find out bits of information about Captain James Cook which can often be given to students in a very boring and passive way. Students will find out bits of information which they are apparently passing on to their fellow Aboriginal people about the new settlers.

Most classrooms teach this information in a way where the teacher will be standing in the front of the class and telling the students this information, however in this Webquest students are able to do the research themselves in a project-based task. The ability for students to work individually allows a wide range of creative minds to show similar information in many different ways. The common goal in this task will ensure fast finishing students will be able to assist the students falling behind and will be able to motivate these slower learners with their ideas. As a small part of the colonisation unit of work, this Webquest is an easy way to get students thinking in different ways and to self direct their own learning in the classroom.
