Introduction
There has been a terrible storm that has torn town the Art History Hall! The timelines and documents of the 20th century has been corrupted and mixed up due to this horrible storm! In this class we have learned about the art movements of the 20th century. It is up to you to restore the facts and create a time capsule to secure the information. During this project you and three other students will set out on a journey to find out material regarding the art movement you are assigned to, create a time capsule video and then finally, present the video to your class.
Task
Your job, with the help of your two partners, is to accumulate as much information as you can regarding the art movement you are assigned to. There are three different roles: (1) the artist from the movement, (2) the art historian, and (3) the art museum curator. Each role has a specific task and should be taken to the farthest extent so you can create the most historically accurate time capsule. Once you have gained all the knowledge you can as an artist, historian and museum curator, you will then dress in the attire of your role to create the video. This will be used to help teach your fellow classmates, as well as students in the future!
Process
- You will be divided into group of three and will be assigned to a specific movement in the 20th century (Fauvism, German Expressionism, Abstract, Cubism, Futurism, Supremacism, Constructivism, De Stijl)
- Once you are assigned your group and topic you will meet together and choose what role each person will take. Each role will research a different aspect of the movement:
- The Artist of the Movement- Imagine you are one of the famous artist living and working during this movement. Your job is to find out what is going on in the world during the time period. How does that influence your art? Why do you create this kind of art? Why is it important? You are to pick THREE of the most famous artist of this movement and learn everything there is to know about him/her.
- The Art Historian- art historians study object of art in their historical development and stylistic contexts (genre, design, format and style). You will look at famous pieces from this movement as well as research the historical context of this movement. Determine: What is the artistic style of this movement? How are the elements of art used? Why are they used this way? How does the style of this movement fit with the historical context of the movement?
- The Art Museum Curator- You are in charge of putting on compiling different pieces of art form this movement. You must learn: Who are the famous artists from this time? What are some famous pieces form this time? How do these pieces show historical context and/or the style of the movement? After doing this you are to which pieces to put in the time capsule and why.
- Once your team has decided who is what role you will begin your research on the internet. You are looking to answer the questions regarding your specific role as well as additional information that would benefit your time capsule. Here are a few research links that could be helpful for you and your team:For the next week you and your team will meet to do research and create the ultimate guide through your art movement.

- Once your have gathered all of your information, it is now time to create your look! You may need to go back and do a little extra research if needed. Be creative! Use your time period to your advantage to dress like the artists or people during the movement. Each person/role should have a different outfit. You will be given two class periods to finish this part.
- Now it is time to make the video! You will be given 3 class periods to finish. Requirements include:Present the video to the class Present the video in class
- All questions from each role answered (each person will speak and answer their roles questions)
- Each person/role will have a costume
- Music from the period playing in the background
