Area and Perimeter MathQuest

Introduction

Throughout the year, you have used what you learned and applied it to Area and Perimeter. Today, you will complete a MathQuest to dig deeper into both Area and Perimeter.

ARE YOU READY!?

Task

Students will have to complete various problems dealing with perimeter and area on an interactive site and in a video. Along with this, a student will design a floor plan, calculate the area and perimeter of it, and answer problems pertaining to the created floor plan! ALWAYS SHOW YOUR WORK! :)

You will need:
Pencil
Area and Perimeter MathQuest Handout
Floor Plan Handout
Computer
Graph paper
Colors/Markers

Process

1. Go Area & Perimeter: All You Need to Know web page. Here, you will brush up on both Area and Perimeter, and practice some problems before you start drawing the floor plan of your new house! First, complete all 3 levels of perimeter, then complete all three levels of area. Record your answers and work on the Area and Perimeter MathQuest Handout.

2. Next you will watch the video and complete the short interactive games and activities. Don’t forget to record your work and answers on the Area and Perimeter MathQuest Handout when asked to answer problems!

3. Now, you will sketch a floor plan for your dream house on graph paper. Your floor plan must have at least 5 rooms (kitchen, living room, bathroom, and 2 bedrooms). Note that each square on the graph paper represents one square foot. Be sure your rooms are a reasonable & realistic size (a bathroom will need to be large enough for a shower, toilet, and sink). Click HERE to view an example of one. DO NOT USE THE EXACT SAME MEASUREMENTS OF THE EXAMPLE.

4. After your floor plan is finished, you need to be able to sell your house. To sell a house, your buyers need to know how many square feet your house is and the perimeter of it. Complete the steps on the Floor Plan worksheet given to you to work you through. Oh, and show your work! Record your ONLY final answers on the Area and Perimeter MathQuest Handout.

5. Now, using your floor plan, complete the 2 questions on the online handout. Don’t forget to record your work and answers on the Area and Perimeter MathQuest Handout.
