Introduction
Communicable diseases means a disease that you can 'catch' from someone else.
These type of diseases can be spread in a number of different ways and they can also be prevented with the right preventions put in place.
In this reasearch assignment you will leanr about different communicable diseases and how you can prevent/treat these.
Task
Within our school community there are reoccuring communicable diseases.
Parents are not always aware of signs and symptoms of these diseases and therefore medical treatment isn't utlised straight away. This leads to infected students being sent to school while still contagious and not recieving appropariate treament to kill the disease. Prevention in school and home are essential in stopping the spread of such diseases.
Your task is to create posters for the school classrooms and brochures to be sent home to the parents which contain vital infomration on preventing and treating these diseases.
Process
What to do:
1. Choose a a group of 4 to work with.
2. Select a disease to research
- Pediculosis (head lice)
- Measles
- Influenza (including Swine Flu)
- Chicken Pox (varicella)
- School sores
- Fifth Disease (Slap Cheek)
- Ringworm
- Whopping cough (pertussis)
3. Research your disease and be sure to include:
- How it is contracted - causes
- Signs and symptoms
- Prevention
- Treatment
- Contagious period
- Any complications
4. Create a poster for the classroom which includes the above information. Make it colourful, eye-catching and easy to read.
5. Create the brochure to send to the parents using word or publisher. Be sure to include the above information.
Evaluation
Students will be assesed on their work through the following criteria:
- ability to work well within a group
- details provided about the disease
- quality of work presented
- has a poster and brochure been produced
- is all required information present on both the brochure and poster
- are they set out in an informative, easy to follow way
Conclusion
Hopefully the reasearch and the development of the poster and brochure will of allowed you to gain an understanding of the diseases which are affecting our school community.
The brochures will hopefully also help parents by provding them with useful information they need to know to stop the spread of communicable diseases in our school community.
