Year Nine History Web Quest Assignment

Introduction

Tasmania has been inhabited by Aboriginal people for over 35,000 years. Tehre is no reliable evidence about how many people lived in Tasmania before colonisation, but the most reliable estimate is around 7,000 people.

In 1803 CE, the British settled the island at Risdon Cove. During the years since, Aboriginal people were targeted by the British in what amounted to a genocide. By 1823, only 203 Aboriginal Tasmanians had survived. This number would fall further.

As you complete the following activities, you will learn about the experiences of Aboriginal Tasmanians and colonial settlers and the period known as The Black War.
