Introduction
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where the levels of glucose, or sugar, in persons blood is too high. Blood glucose can normally be regulated by insulin (a hormone) that is made by pancreas. When a person has diabetes, the pancreas does not make enough insulin, or there is a problem with how the body's cells react to it.
There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2. Many people with Type 2 diabetes have no symptoms at all and are at risk of developing the more severe type of diabetes, Type 1.
Diabetes can be prevented with a number of lifestyle changes which we will discover within this lesson...

Task
What do you want me to do?
Diabetes is preventable, and manageable.
I would like you, in groups of three, to create a poster to show what changes to a persons lifestyle could be made to prevent diabetes. I would like you to focus on a persons eating and activity lifestyle for this poster.
It would be important to include an alignment with the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, along with what you have learnt about diabetes in your research.
You will have 1 lesson of 1 hour to complete this.
How will I manage my time?
It will be important to designate roles, and work as a team in order to finish your task on time. Start by designating roles to each of the three members in your group so each know exactly what they should be doing.
Process
Using resources below, and some of your own. Research diabetes and the lifestyle changes required to prevent diabetes and/or manage it. You may like to visit some of the following websites to help you in your discoveries. Do not forgot to check the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating!

| The presentation is clear and easy to read. | Poster is unclear and unable to be read. | Poster is clear and able to be read. | Poster is clear and easily readible. | Poster is precise and is very easy to read. |
Conclusion
Now that you have completed your poster on diabetes prevention and/or management, write a three sentence reflection in your workbook discussing what you have learnt. Make comparisons from when you first started the poster, to what you know now.
After completing, swap with another student and note whether you had the same or different feelings.
Teacher Page
The purpose of this webquest was to allow students to independently monitor their own learning through providing everything they needed on one website. It was targeted to a Year 5/6 audience.
The students were working towards the following content descriptors:
Investigate community resources and strategies to seek help about health, safety and wellbeing (ACPPS053)
Develop project plans that include consideration of resources when making designed solutions individually and collaboratively (ACTDEP028)
