Introduction
Now that we are reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret, you should know that it is a story about mystery and survival. Althought the book is marjority photos, you will still get a sense of the story line that surrounds the entire book.
We will be reading this book for three weeks (however, the book has more pictures than pages to read. The book is to be read as a silent movie, so read it as if it really is a movie) and will be taking vocabulary quizzes twice a week, doing the actual activities on the website, having class discussions, writing a reading journal after every section read, and at the end we will watch the movie.

Process
Your task is to read the book and follow the story that is occuring. Majority of the book has a lot of pictures and less words. The book is supposed to style a silent movie. For those of you who have yet to see a silent movie, here is one just to spark your interests (Hint: This silent movie that I am showing you is what the entire book is based off of.)

So now that you've seen what a silent movie is, you can tell that you're supposed to really imagine what the people are seeing as the scenes unfold. That is how you're supposed to read The Invention of Hugo Cabret.
While you're reading the book, you should also go the The Invention of Hugo Cabret website, watch the intro that Brian Selznick has and complete the tasks on the website.
- Your first task is to go the website and at the top right, you should see a "sign in or register" link. Click register and create your username
- After that you are to click next and create a password. Your password should be "tiffin" with two numbers of your choice after it and choose a security question that only YOU would know the answer to.
- Click next and it should bring you to a location page. Put in "United States" for location and "Ohio" for State/Province and submit.
- From there you should get to a page that asks if you can print out your username or go on from there. Print out your username so that you have it for later.
- Once you have that, go back to the The Invention of Hugo Cabret website and now you should have your own username and password.
- Watch the short intro Brian Selznick has and then you should be able to go to your tool trunk for your personal items.
- If this does not work, you will have to continue as a guest and go ahead to the Automaton Workbench. If you have your account working, you can build your own automaton. If not, you cannot and go ahead to the fix broken automaton. Read and follow the instructions and fix the broken automaton. Once you fix the automaton, show me and you can move on to step 8.
- After you completed building the automaton, go ahead over to the door which is the "Mechanical Maze" and complete the maze. Read and follow the instructions. The time is 1 minute and your goal is to get out within that time. Once you pass that, show me and you can continue step 9.
- From here you have the option to go to the "Write your own word and picture stories" or "Hugo Redux: Tell it your way" and follow those instructions and tell your own story with the templates. After you finish one of those stories, show me and you're done! (:
Evaluation
After you've shown me all of your tasks and vocabulary words, we will have a class vocab and story quiz.
