Introduction
You are now getting ready to read one of the 100 most influential books of all time! Voltaire’s novella Candide is arguably the most taught piece of French literature. As it is with most great pieces of literature, Candide was highly controversial at the time of its publication, which caused it to be banned across France and even made Times’ top 10 censored books list, which described the novella as “Monty Python circa 1759.” It’s your turn now to do some research and figure out what makes this story so controversial, but also so “enlightening” (you’ll get that pun soon enough!)
