Where in the World do I Live?

Introduction

Have you ever wondered where in the world you live?  What is a continent?  What is a country, a state, a county?  In this webquest students will create a flip book with different maps including Mesa County, Colorado, the United States, North American, and the World. Students should be able to find the place where they live (Mesa County and the Grand Valley) on the map.  Students will see and find physical geographical features of their area and the world as well as be able to read a map.

Task
  • Check out the maps of the world, North America, United States, Colorado, and Mesa County
  • Create a flip book with each map
  • Label the maps to find out exactly where you live
  • Share your map with your group
  • As a group choose one map to share out to the class
Process
  • World Map--Label map with the correct continents and oceans.  Color North America red and label the Grand Valley.  Glue  the world and the title the last page of the construction paper flip book.

  • North America Map--Label map with correct countries and the oceans.  Also label the Gulf of Mexico.  Color our country (The United States) red and label the Grand Valley (don't forget Alaska and Hawaii).  Glue North America and the title on the second to last page of the construction paper flip book.

  • United States Map--Label Colorado and the bordering states.  There should be 7 states that border Colorado.  Color Colorado red and label the Grand Valley.  Glue the United States map and it's title on the second page of the construction paper flip book.

  • Colorado Map--Label Mesa County and color it red.  Label our state's capital: Denver with a large star with a circle around it.  Label the Grand Valley and Grand Junction in Mesa County.  Glue the Colorado map on one side of the first page of the flip book with the correct title.

  • Mesa County Map--Label Grand Junction with a large dot and the Grand Valley with a dashed circle around the general area. Color the dot for Grand Junction red.   Label the Colorado and Gunnison rivers.  Glue the map and its title on the other side of the first page of the flip book.

Conclusion

Now you know where in the world you live!  You've created a flip map of the world, North Amercia, the United States, Colorado, and Mesa County.  Do you think you can you pick out our country from others on a world map?  What did you learn about the continents in our Earth?  The world is so large and where we live is only a tiny part of Earth.  Think about friends and family who might live in other states.  Do they border our state?  Could you find them on a map of the United States?  Use this flip map on your assessment and in the furture.
