Pantomime is the ability to communicate without speaking; a play or story in which the entire performance is done without speaking.
The French say Marcel Marceau was the original pantomimist; England says they had the first pantomimist, then the Greek say they were pantomining long before either of the former. How will we know?

Here's a little information to whet your curiousity:
When film was first introduced in the 1890's, movies were silent, simply because the technology did not exist to add voices. The experience was a visual one until music was added. Before long, a short bit of text was added to the screen to explain what was happening. But the greatest burden of communicating the message was left to the actors. Movements were large, exaggertd, and even somewhat ridiculous. Because the entire story had to be told without voices, this melodramatic acting style was necessary.
As technology evolved and voices, sounds, and music became commonplace in films, the acting style changed, too. Early "talking pictures", the term used for movies in which the characters' voices were heard, showcased acting very similar to that of silent films. It wasn't long before for silent films to be replaced by the more subtle, realistic acting we see in films today.
Silent acting is still common. A more exaggerated yet highly popular form of silent acting is the art of mime. Mime artists entertain with short situations, which are rarely inrtended to take the form of an entire plot-driven story..
Actors who study theatre, movement, in particular, will often say pantomime is the gateway to really understanding the body and how to communicate effectively with it.
One thing that makes pantomime unique is the fact that most gestures are created by the actors, rather than pre-scripted. Another important thing is the pantomime scenes you will be performing will be stories that follow dramatic structure.
