You are about to travel back in time to world very different from that which you live in today. It was a simpler time, before video games, cell phones, or even computers. Although the 1960's were very different from what you are used to growing up with, you will probably be surprised at how well you can relate to, understand, and even learn from the characters in S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders. You will explore everything from 60's music and fashion to government, cars and teen life.

Task

What was it like living in the 1960s?

Your task is to gain knowledge of 1960s culture in order to better understand and connect with the characters inThe Outsiders.

On the Process page, you will be asked to explore several aspects of the 60s. You will be asked to do some investigative work by reading and finding pictures and specific facts and details about important people and culture of the decade.

Process

Follow directions and enjoy the adventure!

  1. Open a PowerPoint document and put your heading (first and last name, date, hour) in the top right corner.

  2. Save your document in the BRAUD SHARED folder for your HOUR as: 1960s Webquest LASTNAME (for example: 1960s Webquest Braud)

  3. The following items need to fit on ONE PowerPoint page - you can use any typefaces or layout you choose.

Use Google to find pictures of the following items. Copy and paste the pictures in your word document and label them.  

  1. S.E. Hinton (author) - write 3 facts about the author of The Outsiders

  2. Madras shirt

  3. Male pompadour (hairstyle) 

  4. A female hairstyle or fashion of the 1960s

  5. An early-60s Corvair

  6. An early-60s Corvette

  7. 1960s Paul Newman - write a sentence to tell who he was and what he did

  8. 1960s Elvis Presley - write a sentence to tell who he was and what he did

This assignment is worth 20 points:

Saving your file properly: 5 pts.

Scavenger Hunt items: 8 pts.

Name on your document: 2 pts.

Using class time wisely: 5 pts.
