Preschools Around The World:
Why Does The U.S. Lag Behind?
Over the next eight weeks we will be searching for answers to this question.
Our textbook supplies some of the answers but additional factors may play a part.(pp 443)
In the United States we believe the early, formative years are crucial for physical, social and emotional, cognitive and, more recently, specific academic development as well as building independence. Are these beliefs universal?
What elements contribute to forming an effective preschool program?
What are the goals for preschool and do these goals differ around the globe?
Are there strategies and philosophies that are implemented in other countries that could be utilized in our classrooms?
Are there barriers that impact learning that could be addressed that would increase the odds for success?

Task
On your virtual journey around the globe you will research eight countries.
Concentrate your research efforts on the following questions.
How are preschool programs funded?
What level of teacher training is required, if any, to teach in a preschool program?
What is the purpose of preschool?
Is there one universal format or do programs vary greatly based on location?
What barriers, if any, inhibit learning?
Assignment
- Your task is to gather information and write a six page compare and contrast essay on the countries included under the process page.(submit on teacher page)
a. APA format and citations
- Select one of the countries in review and prepare a power point presentation.
a. Elaborate on the specifics of their preschool education system.
b.Highlight any specific strategies or philosophies or interesting approaches you would like to utilize in your future classroom.
c. Include one video, not to exceed five minutes, in the presentation (this information must be found independently. Links will not be included in this quest)
d. APA citation format for resources page as well as individual slides in power point
- Prepare a handout for class members with key points of interest included in your presentation.
