Oceanography for Elementary Students

Introduction

Hello Kids! I'm Donny the dolphin, and I'm here to show you around my home under the sea! Below me is a picture of an oceanographer doing some underwater diving, also some facts he has found through oceanography. Our goal is to find more interesting facts on our own journey. Let's go explore!

  • Oceanography is the science devoted to the water on Earth.
  • Oceanographers are the scientists that study the oceans on Earth.
  • They study ocean levels, currents, and temperatures. Some also study organisms and marine plants.
  • The ocean covers seventy percent of the Earth’s surface and contains ninety-seven percent of Earth’s water.
  • The Mariana Trench is the deepest place in the ocean and on Earth. It’s 36,201 feet deep.
  • Ninety percent of all volcanic activity occurs in the ocean.
  • The longest mountain range on Earth is the Mid-Ocean Ridge.
  • Almost ninety percent of the ocean is unexplored.
Task

Have you ever wondered about ocean life? Let's take a journey to the deep blue sea!

Graphic showing divers and other oceanographic careers

You and your team will be working in groups of 4. The group, working together, will analyze EACH of the three categories on the process page, and answer the questions.

Do not forget to list your team's discovery for each category on a sheet of paper. Now, let's explore!

Process

Station One: Animals in the water

  • What is the biggest animal in the ocean?
  • Which animal has eight tentacles?
  • What animal has three rows of teeth?

Station Two: Life Cycles

  • What animals lay their eggs on the beach?
  • Which animals lay their eggs in a hiding place, leave them, and come back for them to hatch?
  • Which animals don’t lay eggs?

Station Three: How we can help the ocean

  • What can we do to keep our beaches clean?
  • What can you to your plastic soda holders before throwing them away?
  • What do you do with your aluminum and plastic cans when finished?

As a group of 4, run through these stations and answer each question collectively. Good luck!

Evaluation

Let's find out how you did on this Oceanography Webquest!
