Introduction to Feature Article Writing

a. Watch this Youtube clip. This is a clip by a teacher emphasising the features of a good feature article.  As you watch, record the key tips about the following topics in your exercise book.

b. Answer the questions in full sentences (this will create some good notes for you to use).

  • intent (how is the intent of a feature article different to a news story?)
  • structure (what elements does a feature article need?)
  • The tone and emotion used determine whether the feature article is what?
  • What reasons might a reader have to write a feature article (eg to inform)
  • What voice (active or passive) should you use?
  • What tense usually works best?
  • Should your sentences and paragraphs be short and sweet or lengthy and complex?
  • Accuracy, audience and anecdotes are useful in feature articles.  What role do they each play?

Creating your own Feature Article
