Capitalization

  1. The following items should be capitalized :
  • The first word in a sentence

An X-ray will be required    =      An is the first word in a sentence

 

  • Names of persons, places, streets, and organizations

Sandra Day O’Connor       =     Name of  persons

Oak Street    =  Name of street

Paris, France = Name of place

The United Nations  =     Name of organizations

 

  • The first word in a direct quotation

“We’re hungry!” the children shouted.

            The first word in a direct quotation

 

  • Names of  language, specific school courses, documents, and important historical events.

Spanish      =      names of  language

Advanced Algebra      =    names of specific school courses

Emancipation Proclamation     =     names of documents

Civil War    =      Names of important historical

 

  1. Here are some more examples of words that should always be capitalized.
  • Days of the week, months, and holidays

Tuesday    =        days of the week

July 4        =       months

Independence Day  =       holidays

 

  • The first word and each important word in the title of a book, play, poem, etc.

  • Certain abbreviations

M.D.

NAACP

 

  • The initials of a person’s name

John Q. Public

T.J Ackerley

 

  • A personal title only when it comes before the name

  • Proper adjectives
