One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Introduction

Before we begin reading Ken Kesey's "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest", it is important to understand the history of the events in the story. Working alone or in groups, you will complete the following tasks on a word document or Google doc that you will then email me. You may also wish to print off a copy for class discussion and your reference. Please type up your answers using your own words.

Task

Task 1: The novel is set somewhere in the late 1950s or early 1960s. You will need to create a timeline of 5 events that you feel are the most important that took place in the United States between 1955-1965. With each event, you need to write a brief description (2-3 sentences) of the event in complete sentences.

Task 2: Write one full paragraph for each of the six mental illnesses and treatments describing what it is, the process, and the symptoms.

1. Paranoiod schizophrenia

2. Electroshock therapy

3. Lobotomy

4. Epilepsy

5. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

6. Anxiety disorders

Task 3: Create a compare and contrast chart depicting the similarities and differences between psychiatric hospitals in our society compared to psychiatric hospitals in the 1950s and 1960s. You do not need to write in complete sentences for this task, and you can use a venn diagram or chart to organize your thoughts.
