Cooking with Fractions

Introduction

Not all people are chefs, but we are all eaters.  Most of us need to learn how to follow a recipe at some point in our lives.  To create dishes with good flavor, consistency, and texture, the various ingredients must have a relationship to one another.  For instance, to make cookies that both look and taste like cookies, you need to make sure you use the right amount of each ingredient.  Add too much flour and your cookies will be solid as rocks.  Add too much salt and they'll taste terrible!

Task

You just got home from school.  You check your cell phone and see that there is a voicemail message.  It is your mom and she needs you to start preparing dinner for the family.

The phone rings again.  It's your mom reminding you to double the recipe for your entree and side dishes.  She also needs you to bake cookies for your sister's school fundraiser.  For that recipe you will need to triple the ingredients.

Process

Step 1:  You will need to choose an entree, side dish and cookies for dessert.  Use this link to find a recipe: http://www.cooksrecipes.com

Step 2:  Once you have found your items you are cooking, you need to start figuring out your measurements.  For the entree, you need to double the recipe.  You will need to type up this recipe after your conversion.

Step 3:  Next, double the recipe for your side dish.  Also, type this recipe up.

Step 4:  Take your cookie recipe and triple it for your sister's bake sale.  Type this up as well.

Step 5:  You will need to put together your meal in a packet.  In your packet you need to include the original recipes and your conversions.  Make sure your conversions are correct!!!
