Progressive Era Reforms

Introduction

Today we will be learning about the Progressive Era reforms that took place in early 20th century America. As well learned yesterday, Progressives realized how much corruption was in America at the time. Their plan was to implement government regulation in place in order to better society.

The WebQuest we will travel through will take a critical look at the major reform of the Temprance Movemement. Making alcohol illegal had many repercussions and you will be analyzing the importance of the movement.

After today's WebQuest, you will be able to say "I can analyze the roles of important figures in the Temprance Movement and I can comprehend the meaning of multiple political cartoons covering the Temperance Movement".

Task

Today you are going to assume the role of a historian to travel back to America during this Progressive Reform. I want you to soak in the information you learn and take a critical look at the Temperance Movement's role in American history.

Process

1. Click on this link and write down two facts from the video about why Americans supported the Temperance Movement: http://www.history.com/topics/prohibition/videos/america-goes-dry-with-…;

2. Once you watch the video, click on the following link and scroll down to the section titled: Prohibition's Characters. http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/prohibition/educators/activities/

3. Get in groups of four and complete a character chart over one character listed on the website. (No repeats so tell me when you have your character).

4. Leave groups and go back to your individual seats. You will read the following article: http://law.jrank.org/pages/10714/Temperance-Movement.html

5. Go to the following website: https://prohibition.osu.edu/prohibition-party-cartoons. Once at the website, select three political cartoons and complete the cartoon analysis worksheet on each.

6. Answer on same sheet as your bell-ringer. On a scale of 1-5, how did the WebQuest work for you today? Why?

Evaluation

Activity 1: Prohibition's Characters

Group Work: Participation will be factored into each individua's grade.

Worksheet: Each of the four boxes will be graded for: correctness of information, complete sentences (2 sentences minimum for each), and notes on the back for other group's presentations.

Activity 2: Temperance Political Cartoons

Worksheets: Students must critically analyze three political cartoons and complete the questions that apply to each political cartoon on the cartoon analysis worksheet. This is mostly your opinion on how you interpret the images of the cartoon, but you must make references to how the image represent the Temperance Movement in America.

Conclusion

Momentum from the Progressive Era in America allowed for the temperance movement to gain footing and make significant headway. The movement focused on the elimination of alcohol and eventually led to the 18th amendment, but could not have been successful without the help of influential women. This prohibition amendment was later repealed, but the effects of it were heavily felt in Progressive Era America.
