Introduction
Welcome to the world of Trigonometry and the Unit Circle!!!
Task
Throughout this webquest, you will be completing 3 tasks that will enhance your understanding of the unit circle. The 3 tasks are:
- evaluating all six trigonometric ratios using the unit circle
- defining angle measurements in both degrees and radians
- finding the values of all six trigonometric ratios using coordinate points on the terminal side of angles
Some key vocabulary terms for these activities are:
- the unit circle is a circle with a radius of 1
- an angle is in standard position when the vertex lies on the origin, the initial side lies on the positive x-axis and the terminal side lies in one of the four quadrants
- a positive angle is the result of the terminal side being measured in a counterclockwise direction
- a negative angle is the result of the terminal side being measured in a clockwise direction
Process
In this lesson, you will complete the following three assignments:
Task #1: Evaluating Trig Functions Using the Unit Circle
Task #2: Converting Angle Measurements between Degrees and Radians
Task #3: Evaluating Six Trig Functions of All Angles
Each task provides you with some introductory notes that will guide you in how to solve each problem and master the skill. The objective at the completion of these tasks is memorization of the unit circle and application of the unit circle to all trigonometric ratios.
Evaluation
At the end of this unit, you will be evaluated by being given a summative assessment on the three tasks. The summative assessment will consist of:
- Filling out a blank unit circle
- Answering questions evaluating the six trig functions using the known families of angles from the unit circle
- Answering questions evaluating the six trig functions of all angles using coordinate points on the terminal side
- Answering questions focusing on the conversion of angle measurements between degrees and radians
Conclusion
Now that you have completed this webquest, you should have a good understanding of the basics of unit circle and coordinate point trigonometry. We will be using these skills to start solving trigonometric equations and defining some trig properties.
