Introduction

Money and Financial Mathematics

Year level: 4

Content Strand: Number and Algebra

Curriculum Outcome:  Money and Financial Mathematics

Solve problems involving purchases and the calculation of change to the nearest five cents with and without technologies (ACMNA080).

Student’s prior knowledge:  Students will have prior knowledge, skills and abilities of concept of money and financial mathematics from year 3. Students will have concepts on how to represent money values in multiple ways through both written data and mental consumptions. Students will have the skills and knowledge on how to count the change needed through simple transactions and be able to round the change to the nearest five cents.

Proficiency Strands:

  • Understanding includes connecting names, numerals and quantities
  • Fluency includes readily counting numbers in sequences, continuing patterns and comparing the lengths of objects
  • Problem-solving includes using materials to model authentic problems, sorting objects, using familiar counting sequences to solve unfamiliar problems and discussing the reasonableness of the answer
  • Reasoning includes explaining comparisons of quantities, creating patterns and explaining processes for indirect comparison of length.

The unit of work is based around Money and Financial Mathematics, students will have the opportunity to share their prior knowledge and skills on this unit of work, as well as build upon and gain new skills and knowledge of money and financial mathematics. The unit of work allows students to become successful and confident in rounding up and down to the nearest 5 cent piece using technology learning materials to support their understanding. Students have the opportunity to be accountable and responsible for their own learning throughout this unit of work, students are encouraged to engage with other students to embed their  problem solving skills, share knowledge, understand their methadology and become confident and involved learners.
