Baking a Cake

Hello Class! Welcome to Home Economics! Today we are going to learn how to make a cake.

Task

In groups of three, you will learn how to bake a cake while realizing how school subjects relate to something as simple as everyday baking. 



1. Your clumsy teacher had the directions all cut into strips to hand out one step to each student, but what would you know, I dropped them. I am going to need some help putting them into the correct sequence of events.

 

2. I am also going to need help making the recipe two and a half times larger than the recipe you are given. I also want you to half all of the ingredients you are given just in case you want to make a cake just for yourself one day.



3. Your last task is to decide if the cake is a mixture or a compound.

Process

 

1. As I said in the task section, your first step is to arrange your directions into sequential order. I recommend working in a group of four to complete this task. Here are your mixed up directions:

-In a large bowl, cream together the butter, sugar and dry strawberry gelatin until light and fluffy.

- Allow cakes to cool in their pans over a wire rack for at least 10 minutes, before tapping out to cool completely

-Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 9 inch round cake pans.

-Combine the flour and baking powder; stir into the batter alternately with the milk.

-Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.

-Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a small knife inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

-Beat in eggs one at a time, mixing well after each.

-Blend in vanilla and strawberry puree.





Task Two:

Follow this link to the recipe for strawberry cake. Find the recipe and make the recipe two and half times larger than the one you have now. Also, make the recipe half the size of the original recipe.







Task Three:

The last step is to decide whether the cake batter is a mixture or a compound. Write a paragraph discussing why you chose mixture or compound.
