Titanic Voyage

Introduction

The idea behind the Titanic was developed at a dinner party by J. Bruce Ismay (White Star Line President) and Lord Pirrie (Harland & Wolff Shipbuilders Chairman) It was one of three ocean liners they planned to complete.  On May 31, 1911 Titanic’s hull was launched in Belfast Ireland, at the Harland & Wolff shipyards. 100,000 people watched the event. Captain Edward J. Smith was the senior captain and had 38 years of service previous to this event.  On Wednesday, April 10, 1912 the Titanic’s passengers boarded in Southampton for the ride to New York.

People were divided into social classes based on their background, wealth, and education.  The Titanic was divided by layers. The lowest level was for the manual workers.  The next level up was the third-class passengers; many of these people were from outside countries hoping to come to start a new life in America.  The second class level was for merchants, professionals, and teachers.  The very top level held first class; these were the rich and aristocratic passengers.  Social class systems were very strict during this time.  Barriers kept everyone separated, forcing them to be trapped in their own area.

For this assignment you will take on the role of a first class passenger, second class passenger, third class passenger, or crew member aboard the Titanic.

As a first class passenger, you would discuss your rank in society, how much your ticket cost, and your intentions for traveling on the Titanic.  You would discuss your living conditions and types of activities you participate in on the Titanic.

As a second class passenger, the role would be much the same.  You would discuss your profession, how much your ticket cost, and intentions for traveling on the Titanic.  You will discuss your opportunities and activities available as second class on the ship.

As a third class passenger, you would talk about your reasons for traveling on the Titanic, your life before the Titanic, how much your ticket cost and how you raised money for it.  You would also talk about the living conditions on the ship from your perspective.

You will be researching your Titanic member by filling in their "Ticket Voucher".  After you have gathered information you will create a google slide show on your passenger.  You must have a total of 6 google slides.  On those slides you need:

Slide 1) Name, birthday, country of origin and occupation (job), picture

Slide 2) Who they were traveling with, reason for traveling, graphic

Slide 3) Price of ticket, social class, living conditions on the ship, graphic

Slide 4) Activities on the ship, graphic

Slide 5) Did they survive? Tell their story

Slide 6) Information about the Titanic (size, number of decks, lifeboats, life boat capacity, people on board by class, other interesting facts)

When the google slides are done we will present them to our classmates.
